Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn has become a shopping destination for elevated homewares, premium clothing, and original art. A FOUND guide:
→ Michele Varian (400 Atlantic Ave): Elegant light fixtures, sleek Scandinavian dining tables, sturdy serveware — it’s all here, large or small.
The Ticket: With the right budget, you could outfit an entire apartment with what’s in stock.
→ Primary Essentials (372 Atlantic Ave): Specializes in small household items, like lush bergamot-scented hand soaps sourced from France and linen pillows from Belgium. Also on offer: new release cookbooks and independent magazines, for sale in its “library.”
The Ticket: Same-day delivery for NYC, ideal for last-minute host gifts and emergency dish soap replacements.
→ Outline (365 Atlantic Ave): Offering premium womenswear for an in-the-know crowd, Outline was the first boutique in Brooklyn to stock The Row and other similarly luxe brands. The owners themselves are usually in-store, warmly answering customer questions about their assortment.
The Ticket: An in-house florist creates weekly bouquets for pickup. The boutique’s backyard is gorgeous in the summer, too.
→ Porta (360 Atlantic Ave): Merchandised to resemble a chic, shoppable dining room filled with European tableware, glassware, and art, like terracotta espresso cups or tortoiseshell salad tongs.
The Ticket: Great wares, but also inspiration from those wonderfully chic ceiling murals.
→ Salter House (119 Atlantic Ave): Part store, part coffee shop, Salter House pedals “housewares and house clothes.” Their in-house line includes signature linen nightgowns/pajamas, as well as buzzy contemporary brands like Cou Cou Intimates, a sizable kids section, and a handful of vintage items.
The Ticket: If the stock skews a bit whimsical for you, don’t miss the in-house tea blends, which are brewed and sold onsite.
→ Picture Room (117 Atlantic Ave): Salter House’s sister shop next door, Picture Room is a gallery that sells relatively affordable work by 100+ emerging artists, including paintings, photography, sculpture, posters, and rare prints.
The Ticket: The front-of-house events/exhibits rotate seasonally with work by new artists. –Caitlin Pangares
