Cupcake queen

Neighborhood you live in: Hoboken, NJ
It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
My typical Friday is filled with back-to-back calls and some content if I have time. Today I’m filming a last-minute video of myself eating our Mother’s Day cupcakes, because they’re so damn delicious (and I needed a mid-afternoon pick-me-up). Then I finished proofreading my newsletter that goes out Saturday mornings before rushing out the door to pick up my kids from school. It’s rare that I finish work early enough to get them, even though I block my calendar every Friday afternoon starting at 245p. The work never ends.
I’ve also been teaching cooking classes at the local high school on Fridays to give back to the community I love so much, while inspiring young people to nourish their bodies with delicious food before enjoying dessert. It fills my cup.
Any restaurant plans?
This weekend, my husband and I have date night. We’re going to our favorite local restaurant, 87 Sussex in Jersey City. The rest of the weekend is consumed by my kids’ extracurricular activities, seeing friends and family, and birthday parties. I love regular weekends when we have nothing special planned. They’re my favorite times, soaking in my kids and peeling myself away from work.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Now that it’s nice out, we have our bikes ready for family rides. My kids are on the dance team, too, and competition season is upon us. “Dance mom” is not a title I ever expected to have, but I’m loving it, and could not be more proud. (I also need a second job to support it.)
Any weekend getaways?
We like to spend time upstate in the Catskills at my parents’ house. I grew up going to my grandparents’ bungalow there and now I love to share it with my kids. They love going fishing and spending time in nature. While we’re there, we go to The Homestead in Eldred, NY, for special occasions and will often go to the Bethel Market Cafe with my parents before we leave. My dad meets up with his posse there which is the cutest thing ever. He loves showing off his grandkids — and they have delicious cake.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
A Molekule air purifier.
What store or service do you always recommend?
We order our meat from Cotton Cattle Co. They have a stand at our farmer’s market and deliver locally. It’s incredible quality. I also love GroundUp nut butters — I can’t eat peanut butter, and they have the best cashew butters. My favorite is Cinnamon Snickerdoodle. And I’m convinced these turmeric capsules are why my skin glows.
The number one comment I get on social media is about my eyebrows. Jenn Dock does my eyebrows and makeup for public appearances. She’s the best.

BARS • First Round
Lucky turn
The Skinny: Opened in January on the corner of Nevins and Sackett in Gowanus, Liar Liar serves natural wine, cocktails, and a concise food menu. It’s the neighborhood’s next great hang.
The Vibe: Casually stylish — low-lit and sleek, with a long bar and intimate booths that make it good for date night or drinks with friends. Founded by a group of food and wine industry pros (and pals), the bar strikes a balance between playful and polished, offering well-crafted cocktails, a creative wine list, and a lively atmosphere set to vinyl. If you’re a fan of Bed-Stuy’s Bad Luck Bar, you’ll probably like Liar Liar, too — they share an owner.
The Drinks: An extensive by-the-glass natural wine program ranges from the Rhone to the Finger Lakes, with one recent menu boasting 15 different pours. The cocktail menu is fun and punchy, with an emphasis on fino sherry-spiked martinis including an espresso variation (made with Pedro Ximenez) and a mezcal punch mixed with Cappelletti, the Italian apertivo.
The Food: A brief, salty lineup of what you crave after a few drinks, like a juicy fried chicken sandwich with coleslaw, a burger slicked with herb aioli, or steak au poivre with fries (which you can bundle with a bottle of red for $69).
The Verdict: With a back area ready for expansion and potential to build out the food and drink menus, the bar has no shortage of momentum — and given the crowds it’s already drawing despite a quiet opening, Gowanus is clearly on board. –Phoebe Fry

Happily married

The Skinny: Almost a decade after their first AngloThai pop-up in 2015, John and Desiree Chantarasak finally opened their long-delayed, hotly anticipated restaurant at the end of 2024. As the name suggests, the restaurant melds Thai fine dining with British ingredients, all sustainably and responsibly sourced. It feels like the Thai cousin of Kol, Santiago Lastra’s Mexican-British tasting menu hit (both are backed by MJMK, the genius restaurant group also behind Nuno Mendes’ Lisboeta). If you like those establishments, you’ll likely love AngloThai.
The Vibe: Off bustling Seymour Place, sweetly fragrant smells emit from the open kitchen. Thai details dot the elegant wood interiors, which are reminiscent of Thai favourites Nahm and BoLan: the furniture was built in Chiang Mai from indigenous wood, there’s artwork and textiles from all over Thailand, and the brass cast lighting reflects an ancient Thai craft tradition.
The Food: Expect punchy Thai flavours and plenty of spice in elegant presentations. While it launched with an à la carte offer, AngloThai has now settled into a single tasting menu of 11 courses at dinner or eight at lunch. It showcases John Chantarasak’s Thai-British heritage with highlights like beef cheek with Makrut lime curry and brioche, and wok-fired aubergine with holy basil and soy-cured egg yolk.
The Drink: Sommelier Desiree Chantarasak has curated a selection of refreshing cocktails and a wine list emphasising cooler climates, particularly Austria, to match the bold flavours of the food.
The Verdict: Years in the making but well worth the wait, AngloThai feels like a new classic. –Laura Price
