Mavericks Montauk: Do you even steak?

The Skinny: A sleek surf and turf spot with unobstructed views of Montauk’s Fort Pond from former Crow’s Nest chef Jeremy Blutstein and partner/sommelier Vanessa Price. Mavericks planned to open last summer, but beach glitz of this sort can’t be rushed. It finally opened its doors last month.

The Vibe: With its angular lines and contemporary feel, Mavericks stands in stark contrast to the myriad beachy bohemian shacks that define the area. It wouldn’t be out of place in the Hollywood Hills.

The Food and Drink: Mavericks bills itself as “A Steak Place. But not a Steak Place,” which, okay. To be fair, there’s plenty of local produce and seafood on the menu. Look out for whole Montauk fluke meunière and a porterhouse for two. There’s also a serious wine program.

Where to sit: Any seat on the patio.

Verdict: A shiny place for post-beach drinks (opens at 5 p.m.) or dinner. –Kat Odell

→ MONTAUK: Soho’s Maison Close team is opening Maison Close Montauk. They’re also overseeing the recast (but still raging) restaurant at Ruschmeyers, now known as Talya.

→ AMAGANSETT: Williamsburg pizza hotness Fini takes over for Astro’s Pizza on Amagansett’s main drag in June. Wölffer Kitchen is now Christian’s by Wölffer Estate in Amagansett Square. And after Labor Day, Rowdy Hall is leaving its longtime digs in East Hampton and moving to AMA too.

→ SAG HARBOR: NYC’s Vin Sur Vingt wine bar group is opening an outpost on Main Street. Around the corner, Sag Harbor Kitchen soft-opens Memorial Day weekend in the former Dockside space with chef Melissa O’Donnell at the helm. And burgeoning East End bakery empire Carissa’s finally opened its doors in Sag back in the fall.

→ SOUTHAMPTON: Enchanté Bistro, a new French spot in the former Red Bar space from the team behind East Hampton’s Si Si, has opened.

A notable Greenwich Village fixer-upper

The Federal-style townhouses at 18-20 Christopher St. (above) were always some of the most charming in the Village — so much so that eclectic retailer John Derian designed a shop to fit their 19th century aesthetic back in 2020.

Now, three years later, the store is closed due to a vacate order, and the crumbling buildings have traded hands three times after the 2018 death of Celeste Martin, a beloved Village eccentric. Martin died without a will, leaving behind a Village property portfolio valued north of $25 million.

The fate of the 196-year-old twin townhouses on Christopher Street? Unclear. But the current owners, who purchased the buildings for $12 million last year along with three properties nearby on Gay Street, must embark on repairs under the watch of the city and the Landmarks Preservation Committee. John Derian, meanwhile, remains open for business in the East Village.

One-mile beach life and ‘a crazy good year of travel’

It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
I split my life between NYC and London – a few months here, a few there — and just got back to town last week, so I’m still in full soak-up-the-city mode. On Friday afternoon, that means heading to Anton’s for a late lunch in the sunshine (roast beef sandwich and chicory salad), then meeting a friend for a little end-of-the-week vino.

Any restaurant plans this weekend?
I have a hard time not going to Shukette anytime I want to eat out — it’s just too good. I’m keen to check out to Greywind (Dan Kluger can do no wrong) and get back to C as in Charlie for more Korean BBQ ribs. Weekends are for at-home dinner parties with friends. I go to restaurants on weekdays.

How about a little leisure or culture?
Um, dinner parties are my leisure and culture. I do get out, though I never see/hear/do as much as I want (does any New Yorker?). I’m always stunned by whatever I see at St. Ann’s Warehouse and I’m keen to see Prima Facie, which I missed in London.

Do you get away anywhere regularly for the weekend?
Dear friends are very generous about inviting us to their place in Sagaponack, across the street from a rambling old house I rented for 10 years. My Hamptons routine is pretty easy: Gibson Beach, Marilee’s Farmstand, Wölffer rose, dinner in the backyard, books I start and don’t finish. Is my beach life confined to a one-mile radius? Yes. The less I do out there, the happier I am.

What was your last great vacation?
Before I answer, I should say that I run a travel website, so I travel more than most people. But even for me, 2023 has already been a crazy good year of travel. The experiences that stand out are Sujan Sher Bagh (a tiger safari) and Sujan Jawai (leopards!) in Rajasthan, India; a way-too-brief stay at Passalacqua on Lake Como (above); ten days in Istanbul, Ephesus, and Cappadocia on my first trip to Türkiye; and discovering Feria, an insane, two-week party that happens every year in Seville. (Pause while I catch my breath.) I’m ready to stay put for a while. But I’m scheming the Canadian Rockies over July 4th.
