It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
Since it’s the end of the week, we make sure all the projects are running smoothly. We’re working right now on a couple of very exciting projects in this neighborhood: the rooftop bar at Kellogg’s Diner (where we redesigned the interior, too), and Jr & Son, a 94-year-old family bar we’re bringing back to life after it closed during Covid. Then we usually go check Love's Club, a motorcycle bar/music venue we’re designing for our friend Jane Love. Then we head to check on one of Sal Lamboglia’s new spots — my partner Maddy has been collaborating with Sal for over two years, helping open Swoony’s and Cafe Spaghetti.

Where are you drinking or dining this weekend?
I’ve been enjoying Pomp and Circumstance in Williamsburg. I really appreciate the food, the dips, and the kindness of everyone that works there. Our friend Tyler and my partner Maddy reopened No. 7 on Vanderbilt Avenue, and the broccoli tacos are a masterpiece. A few blocks away, Sage Geyer’s Bar Meridian is a really beautiful room and the cocktails are great.

We’ve also been tasting Chef Alex Ureña's new menu at Pan Pan Vino Vino in Greenpoint, and that’s been a real treat. Alex has worked on some of the best restaurants in NYC and now he’s partnering with us at Vino Vino. If I have to choose one plate, it’s the short ribs (and a side of patatas bravas). And I have a special place in my heart for All Night Skates, a roller disco inspired bar that’s as fun as a bar can be. And every day, Jackie’s huevos rancheros at Kellogg’s, of course.

How about a little leisure or culture?
I like to watch Masters of the Forge and Venezuelan soap operas.

Any weekend getaways?
Sometimes, I try to go fishing, but I’m not very good at it.

What was your last great vacation?
Everyone should do a road trip from the north to the south of Chile. It’s a similar distance to a cross country road trip in the U.S. You start at the driest desert in the world and end at one of the largest continental ice fields, in Patagonia. For dinner, anywhere where you see large trailer trucks parked on the Pan-American Highway — they’ll have great food. Order cazuelas, churrascos, and humitas, and drink all the wine you can find.

On my last trip to Chile, we watched fire and lava come out of the crater of Volcan Villarrica, patiently waiting for the big eruption that never came. A big eruption can last a few minutes, so you really have to be lucky.

Sofreh so good

The Backstory: Opened in 2018 with a homey Iranian menu and pale dining room exemplifying the style of the time, Prospect Heights’ extraordinary Sofreh remains so good that on a recent visit, I grimaced a bit, thinking about all the time I’d wasted elsewhere since its premiere.

The Experience: My party was running a little late for a reservation that was already perilously close to closing time. But Sofreh operates with effortless, polished ease that even service that could be justifiably rushed isn’t. Drinks land quicker (and more interestingly, composed) than most. The rounded spices of chai old fashioneds and saffron vespers also deftly flirt with the flavor profiles that follow.

To eat, start with eggplant topped with cured whey yogurt, crispy onions, and a kiss of mint oil for a silky, creamy, prickly mélange of textures. Dried lime and herb beef stew features hunks of the brilliantly butchered braised beef cloaked in a rich, fragrant mix, its titular ingredients bolstered by plump kidney beans. It’s a culinary quilt, peak comfort for this very moment. Likewise the triumphant lamb shank, a kingly protein portion.

Why it’s FOUND: One of New York City’s best new restaurants of 2018, almost seven years later, Sofreh remains one of its best overall. –Amber Sutherland-Namako

Sky high

Blending alpine chalet charm with sleek minimalist design, The Lodge at Blue Sky is an elegant retreat on a 3,500-acre private ranch that’s a 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City’s airport. Though part of a larger hotel group (the Auberge Resorts Collection), the property exudes a warmth and intimacy — a reflection of the personal touch of its hands-on horse-loving owners, Mike and Barb Phillips. Their presence and care infuse the Lodge with a welcoming, home-like energy. It’s a place that feels personal, grounded, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

The low-slung equestrian-themed retreat blends into its mountainous landscape, offering 46 rooms, suites, and houses, which come wrapped in honeyed blonde cedar wood accented with local stonework. Soaring floor-to-ceiling windows lead to private terraces that offer panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains, some with fire pits (ideally deployed for the house-made s’mores kit). Minibars stocked with complimentary Ritual Chocolate, bath products infused with mineral-rich salts from the Great Salt Lake, and even Coterie diapers for unpotty-trained guests further sweeten the deal.

The hotel proper, with its main lodge and New American signature restaurant Yuta, claims a comparatively small footprint on the sprawling property. Panning out, there are horse stables (Barb rescues neglected horses and other animals), a sheepskin-adorned yurt equipped with lavender and wildflower honey-laced hot toddies (in partnership with The Macallan), a sporting clay range, and even acclaimed whiskey-maker High West Distillery.

Food is a major focus here, with produce, eggs, and more coming from its own nearby Gracie’s Farm. Last year, the team debuted WildKitchen, a seasonal, open-fire dining experience available from May through October. At the heart of this setup is a custom-built grill (available for home purchase) and oven designed by British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who featured an early version in his 2019 film The Gentlemen. The meal takes place under a tent about five minutes from the main lodge, where guests gather around a multifunctional dining table for an elevated twist on rustic live-fire cooking (like a souped-up take on Korean barbecue). There are also special events, like next month’s California kaiseki 12-course omakase with SingleThread Farms, visiting from Sonoma.

The resort also maintains an exclusive lounge at the base of the Silver Star chairlift at Park City Mountain, about a half-hour drive away. As an escape for skiers — or those simply seeking a peaceful mountain retreat — The Lodge at Blue Sky embodies the ultimate home-away-from-home destination. –Kat Odell
